Fever
- A significant fever is considered a rectal temperature greater or equal to 100.4 F or 38 C.
- For previously healthy, well-appearing children 3 to 36 months of age, a temperature of 102.2° F (39° C) might require further evaluation.
- A number of studies have shown that axillary and tympanic temperatures are unreliable in young children.
- A child with a history of a rectal temperature higher than 100.4° F who is afebrile at the time of presentation should be given the same level of attention as one who has a fever at presentation.
